15 March 2010 [13:17] - TODAY.AZ
UN Resident Coordinator in the Islamic Republic of Iran Ms. Consuelo Vidal said here Sunday that Iran has done a lot to achieve Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
According to a press release issued by the UN Information Center (UNIC), she added that many of these minimum development goals have been achieved already by the Islamic Republic.

Winners of national MDGs photo contest, organized by the UN System in the Islamic Republic of Iran, were announced and received their prizes during a ceremony held here at Khavaran Cultural Centre today.

Jamshid Farajvand-Farda, Loqman Rahimi and Amin Nazari won the first, second and third prizes, respectively and received their prizes from Ms. Vidal and World Health Organization (WHO) Representative Dr. Ambrogio Manenti.

Out of more than 300 photographs send from across Iran by professional and amateur artists, the jury members also selected 19 other works as “outstanding” for receiving certificate of honor.

Addressing the participants, Ms. Vidal said MDGs cover issues from health to education and environment. “Only when the whole world has achieved these minimum development goals, then we can make sure the world has peace and stability,” she added. The UN official said this is the right that every single person in the world has to enjoy.

“As the head of the United Nations in the Islamic Republic of Iran, I am delighted that young people have taken this opportunity to send pictures to see how you see that Iran satisfies this commitment to achieve MDGs,” she said.

Ms. Vidal reiterated that Iran has done a lot to achieve MDGs and many of these minimum development goals have been achieved already by Iran. She added that an extra effort has to be made so that achievement in all the goals is there and that is why the UN works in Iran to support the country to achieve this minimum development agenda.

Dr. Manenti also said MDGs are common commitment that 192 countries in the world together with the UN agencies have been taken for the next years and they are: eradicating extreme poverty and hunger, achieving universal primary education, promoting gender equality and empowering women, reducing child mortality, improving maternal health, combating HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases, ensuring environmental sustainability and finally developing a global partnership for development. He added the deadline for achieving these goals is 2015.
