Georgia establishes diplomatic relations with the Maldives

Georgia and the Republic of Maldives have signed a joint communiqué on establishment on diplomatic and consular relations.
"Based on the joint communiqué, the sides will develop bilateral relations in accordance with the fundamental norms and principles of the United Nations, including principles of territorial integrity and sovereign equality," Press and Information Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia says.

The ceremony was held in New York, at Georgia's permanent mission to the UN. From the side of the Republic of Maldives the document was signed by Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations Abdul Ghafoor Mohamed and from the side of Georgia - by Permanent Representative of Georgia to UN Alexander Lomaia.

In accordance with the international practice, the joint notification was sent to ban Ki-moon, the UN Secretary General.

The Republic of Maldives has become the 10th country, which established diplomatic relations with Georgia.

Previously the similar documents were signed with Dominican Republic, Saint Lucia, Peru, Paraguay, Botswana, Cape Verde, Liberia, Brunei, and Marshall Islands.
