Top Turkish official: Turkey must develop strategy for further action against recognition of so-called "Armenian genocide"

05 March 2010 [19:52] - TODAY.AZ
In case of adoption of resolution on the so-called "Armenian genocide" by the U.S. Congress, Ankara should develop a strategy for further action, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's Adviser on Eurasia Geybulla Ramazanoglu believes.

"Turkey will use all its capabilities to prevent adoption of a resolution on the so-called "Armenian genocide" by the U.S. Congress. Even if the U.S Congress will make a decision on the recognition of the genocide, this will not affect Turkey so mush, but Ankara must now develop a strategy for further action" he told Trend News.

U.S. House Committee on Foreign Affairs on Thursday adopted 23 votes to 22 a resolution recognizing the so-called "Armenian genocide".

Armenia claims that the Ottoman Empire committed genocide against Armenians living in Anatolia in 1915.  Making greater efforts to promote the issue internationally, Armenians have achieved its recognition by parliaments of some countries.

The Turkish government has expressed its dissatisfaction with the U.S Congress Committee's decision, saying that it was a blow to Turkish-American relations.

The intervention of a third party, in this case the U.S., in relations between Armenia and Turkey, complicates the process of reconciliation between the countries, Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said.

The minister considers the view that the adoption of the resolution could put pressure on Ankara to ratify the Armenian-Turkish protocols erroneous.

Turkey called on Armenia to open all archives and not to exert pressure through the U.S. Congress.

The official said accusations of committing "genocide" during the 1915 events has always been used as a means of blackmail against Ankara, and possibly with the adoption of resolution on the so-called "Armenian genocide" by the U.S. Congress, Turkey will finally get rid of it.

"There is no official evidence that there has been committed "genocide" against the Armenian," he said. "Armenia refuses Turkey's call to open all files, because it is afraid that it could not prove anything."

Moreover, the absence of pressure from the international community on Armenia in the issue of opening the archives and creation of a joint commission to investigate the 1915events also indicates the artificiality of "genocide", he added.

"At the present geopolitical situation, the U.S. needs Turkey more than Turkey needs it," he noted.
