Iran, Syria cancel visa regime

Tehran and Damascus signed the agreement to abolish the visa regime between the countries.
The agreement was signed by foreign ministers of Syria and Iran - Walid al-Muallim and Manouchehr Mottaki during a two-day visit of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to Syria's capital.

Under the agreement, citizens of both countries can stay in the country without a visa for 90 days, and can enter and leave the country without a visa for six months.

The parties also signed a special agreement on abolishing visas for military officials of Syria and Iran.

During two-day visit Ahmadinejad is holding discussions on issues in relation to changes in the region, international issues and bilateral relations.

"The Zionist regime in the region came to a standstill. These days it represents a danger to the countries close to Palestine. Zionists intend to create a new confrontation in the region. The purpose of the visit was consultations on this kind of issues with officials from Syria," Ahmadinejad told media at Tehran airport.

According to him, Iran and Syria hold long discussions about the situation in the region.

Besides meetings with his Syrian counterpart and other officials of the country, Ahmadinejad also met with leaders of Palestinian resistance groups.
