Political scientist: Russia perceives the idea of East Partnership as the EU intervention in the traditional zone of Russian interests

Naturally, Russia was negative about the East Partnership initiative, which includes six states, including Azerbaijan, said Azerbaijani political scientist Oqtay Sadikhzade.
According to him, Russia perceives the idea of East Partnership as the EU intervention in the traditional zone of Russian interests in the countries directly bordering on Russia.

"Here, Moscow's reaction on the NATO exercises in Georgia, which our country also attended, should be also recalled", noted the political scientist.

"This behavior is due to the geopolitical interests of Russia, which are contrary to the veiled interests of EU, which in reality are NATO and U.S. interests. Of course, Moscow is perfectly aware of it.

I think that Azerbaijan will take a stance of active neutrality in this issue, but will practice a policy of differentiation, including for the supply of gas, by both Nabucco, and the Russian route.

Azerbaijan does not intend to leave the CIS, and no one has the right to demand this from us. Naturally, Azerbaijan sets its national interests at the forefront, holds an independent policy when they coincide with any projects, whether they are related to the energy or security sector. Russia and the overall CIS will have to reconcile with this position no matter how radical their voices are", concluded Sadikhzade.
