Foreign Affairs Ministry released annual report

Constantly consolidating its international reputation and position in the region in 2006, Azerbaijan has activated its foreign policy notably.

During II conference of Azerbaijani representations and consulates in foreign countries, 14 August 2006, Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev regarded their activities and determined the future aims and duties in defense and improvement of Azerbaijanis' interests ensure national security.

MFA information service states that the settlement of Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict within sovereignty, territorial integrity and inviolability of internationally recognized borders of Azerbaijan is still prior of the foreign policy.

Azerbaijan has demonstrated a constructive approach in the settlement of the conflict during the negotiations and used maximally seized the opportunities to achieve improvement.

Azerbaijan's resolution on the issue was unanimously approved in the 60th session of the UN General Assembly after monitoring the situation in the occupied territories.
International condemnation of constitutional referendum in occupied Nagorno Karabakh territory proved the failure of Armenia.

The statements of the European Union, the Council of Europe, the OSCE, GUAM, leading states of the world, as well as OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs proved the illegality of the referendum in Nagorno Karabakh.

It was noted at the NATO summit in Riga that the efforts on the settlement of conflicts in the South Caucasus and Republic of Moldova within sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity should be continued.

The contribution to the energy security of Europe EU-Azerbaijani memorandum signed during Ilham Aliyev's visit to Brrussels is the result of the active foreign policy in development and improvement of energy infrastructure of Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijan continued to attach great importance to its participation in the activities of Organization of Islamic Conference. Azerbaijani foreign minister was chosen a chairman of the conference for a year during the 33rd OIC foreign ministers session in Baku, 19-21 June 2006.

The improvement of the cooperation with GUAM states remains the main point of foreign policy activities.

The presidents of the four countries made this union a full right international organization in the region during the summit in Kiev last year.

As a result of the efforts to prevent menace to the security and settlement of the conflicts in the region the statement was made at the summit and put on the agenda of UN General Assembly.

The contribution to the Kazakhstan's oil delivery to the Europe through Baku-Tbilisi-Jeyhan route and agreement with Kazakhstan, the completion of Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum gas line project and involvement of Middle East partners in the projects were one of the results of Azerbaijan's bridging Europe and Asia.

Azerbaijan is the only South Caucasus country that was admitted to the new established the Council of Human Rights during the meeting of the UN General Assembly up to 2009.

Azerbaijan has opened embassies in Belarus, Malaya, Morocco and Republic of Korea this year.
