Armenian-Turkish relations not dependent on Turkey's EU membership

29 November 2006 [16:55] - TODAY.AZ
Normalization of relations between Armenia and Turkey and establishment of diplomatic relations do not depend on the terms of Turkey’s accession to the EU.

Relations can be normalized without participation of a third party, Diba Nigar Goksel, the Editor of the Turkish Policy Quarterly, Analyst of the European Stability Initiative said in Yerevan. In her words, Turkish accession to the European Union can have a positive impact on the Armenian-Turkish relations.

"In case Turkey is not accessed to the EU the future of the Armenian-Turkish relations may be problematic, since Turkey can become unpredictable, unstable and nationalistic," she said.

The Turkish expert also assumed that EU membership can be replaced by other alliances, specifically strengthening of relations with Russia and Iran.
