27 October 2006 [12:37] - TODAY.AZ
"2.2m people live in Baku including refugees exiled by Armenians. I don’t rule out that the figure may be inexact. We will know the exact number of population after 2009 census to be taken by presidential decree," State Statistical Committee chairman Arif Valiyev told.

He insisted that the real number of people living in Baku is not expected to exceed the said 2.2m.

He also touched on the number of children, APA reports.

"1.6m pupils are studying at secondary schools, of which some 400 000 in Baku. Birth rate is going up in Azerbaijan. The population has reached 8.506m. 109 600 children were born this year as against 102 000 last year. Mortality rate remained almost unchanged. The marriage rate is rising while the divorce rate is falling," he underscored.
