Ulvi Mehtiyev: "Politkovskaya's murder was organized by certain forces in Russia's secret services"

14 October 2006 [00:48] - TODAY.AZ
In an exclusive interview to the Day.Az online paper, Ulvi Mehtiev, an independent observer in Baku, commented the murder of Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya.

Always there is a certain struggle of secret services for influence and management of the power vertical, considers Mehtiev. He pays attention to the fact that Politkovskaya's death had practically coincided with the birthday of Ramzan Kadyrov, Chechen Prime Minister who, as Mehtiyev puts it, has literally monopolized the brand the Chechen Republic and has been also cherishing ambitions of the leader of the whole North Caucasus.

In Politkovskaya's brightest articles in the Novaya gazeta she openly exposed all the campaign conducted by the Kremlin in the Chechen Republic, particularly, the 'cleaning' operations led by the military intelligence (GRU) units among the local population. Accordingly, she had many enemies in this structure, Mehtiyev underlines.

The observer notes at the fact that Politkovskaja very frequently last two years criticized authority of the Kadyrovs and she received threats periodically. Mehtiyev concludes that Politkovskaya has fallen a victim to circumstances of the game conducted by secret services. AIA has to mark that the Prime Minister of Chechnya himself said this week he had no grounds to persecute journalist Anna Politkovskaya.

In Mehtiyev's opinion, the murder was organized by certain forces in secret services of Russia, and he believes the search for the murderers will continue the same way as investigation of journalist Dmitry Kholodov's murder.
