Azerbaijan Domain Registration held a workshop on National Domain Names and Prospects of Internet.

Communication and Information Technologies Ministry officer Aflatun Mammadov said 65% of the country has been provided with telephones. There are 6-7 computers and 30 mobile phones per 100 people in Azerbaijan, APA reports.

InTranS Provider director general Faig Farmanov said InTranS is the first who brought Internet to Azerbaijan. He said national domain of Azerbaijan (.az) was first registered on 25 August 1993. Among CIS countries, Azerbaijan was the second country to own its domain name following Ukraine then.

"Foreign organizations own the domain of some countries. The countries try to possess it now."

He said some 3 000 domain names have been registered in Azerbaijan during 13 years.

"There are more domain names in the other countries. The reason is that former Communication and Information Technologies Ministry didn’t allow the development of Internet in Azerbaijan."

A website www.whois.az was created to protect and provide information on (.az).

A new section –statistics was also set up in the website. Azerbaijan National Academy of Science’s Information Technologies Institute director Rasim Aliguliyev also expressed his dissatisfaction with the fact that only 6-7 percent of Azerbaijanis use Internet.

"It is unbearable that there are only 3 000 domain names in Azerbaijan. It is a fact that some of them don’t function."

He said that the system should be improved and information society should be created.
