20 September 2006 [14:09] - TODAY.AZ
Azerbaijan's law on freedom of assembly and its execution during last year's parliamentary elections was discussed at a meeting, organized yesterday by the OSCE Office in Baku.

Ambassador Maurizio Pavesi, Head of the OSCE Office, said he hoped appropriate amendments to the law would soon be introduced in order to guarantee the right of citizens to organize peaceful meetings.

"The right to peaceful assembly is one of the cornerstones of a democratic society," he added.

Participants at the event, including representatives of the OSCE Office, the Government of Azerbaijan, the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe and local experts, agreed to establish a joint commission to consider the recommendations put forward during the roundtable discussion.

Government officials also agreed that the OSCE Office would continue organizing training courses for law enforcement agencies on freedom off assembly issues.
