Azeri official sees no need for CE monitoring

17 July 2006 [13:20] - TODAY.AZ
An Azeri official has ruled out the need for the activity of any special monitoring group on Azerbaijan.

"The country is a full-fledged member of the Council of Europe (CE) that has fulfilled its commitments to the organization. Since no such monitoring groups are operating in other CE member states, there is no need for one in Azerbaijan," the head of the President's Office socio-political department, Ali Hasanov, told journalists.

Earlier reports suggested that the CE will suspend the monitoring of Azeri commitments soon.

"If any CE institution aspires to work closely with Azerbaijan and support the development of civil society and the process of democratic state building, we will not turn this down. It does not mean that Azerbaijan rejects cooperation with CE institutions," the head of the department said.

Hasanov added that the Azeri authorities are interested in providing true information about the country, AssA-Irada reports.
