Europe rejects groundless accusations against Baku: origin of Azerbaijani gas is completely transparent

Russian gas is not transported to the European Union (EU) through the Southern Gas Corridor, Azernews reports, citing Tim McPhee, the representative of the European Commission on climate and energy issues, as he responded to baseless claims against Baku regarding the supply of Russian gas.

"The Southern Gas Corridor, which provides supplies to the EU markets, is connected only to Azerbaijan's gas fields and is not integrated into the country's wider national gas system. Therefore, Russian gas is not exported to the European Union through the Southern Gas Corridor.

According to our information, in the last two years, Azerbaijan has imported less than 1 billion cubic meters of gas per year from Russia for domestic consumption. However, the total gas export of Azerbaijan is about 24 billion cubic meters, of which about half is sent to EU markets. As I said, our goal to refuse Russian gas is completely clear, and the origin of the gas imported from Azerbaijan is completely transparent," he said in the daily briefing.

In July 2022, Azerbaijan and the EU agreed to increase gas supplies through the Southern Gas Corridor to 20 billion cubic meters per year by 2027 compared to the current level.

The supply of Azerbaijani gas to Europe through the Southern Gas Corridor began on December 31, 2020. The gas pipeline connects the Caspian Sea region to European markets via Georgia and Turkiye.

The 33 billion dollars spent on the realization of the project is much less than the 45 billion dollars previously planned and it is expected that it will pay off within 8-10 years.
