Georgia calls on world community to condemn 'elections' in Abkhazia

15 March 2012 [12:40] - TODAY.AZ
The Georgian Foreign Ministry called on the international community to condemn the elections held in the breakaway region of Abkhazia.

"These so-called elections held by the puppet regime of Abkhazia are illegal, because as a result of policy of Russian troops and the puppet regime of Abkhazia region, the demographic background was dramatically changed by force due to the fact that hundreds of thousands of people were forced to leave their homes under death threat," Georgian Foreign Ministry said in its statement.

The statement says that the rights of the population remaining in the region are violated daily, and the EU mission's observers are not allowed to visit the occupied territories.

"The so-called "parliamentary elections" illegally held in the occupied region of Abkhazia are a complete disregard for internationally accepted norms and principles," the statement says.

"Georgia's Foreign Ministry urged the international community to properly assess the "staged in Abkhazia, a farce" and continue "the pressure on Russia in order to fulfill internationally accepted obligations under the ceasefire agreement of August 2008," the statement says.

Military actions were launched in the Georgian territory, South Ossetia on Aug.8 in 2008. Later the Russian troops occupied the Tskhinvali city and drove the Georgian military back. Russia recognized the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia in late August. In response, Tbilisi broke off diplomatic relations with Moscow and announced two unrecognized republics as the occupied territories.
