Reporter of Azadlyg opposition newspaper beaten - PHOTO - UPDATED

Reporter of the Azadlyg opposition newspaper Agil Khalil was beaten in Baku at 05:00 p.m. on February 22.

A claim was filed in the 7th station of the Binagadi police department and the investigation group is currently inspecting the terrutory.

General director of the Azadlyg newspaper Azer Akhmedov noted that an appeal has been sent to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, General Prosecution and Azerbaijan's Council for Press.

He also noted that reporter Agil Khalil had been subjected to such actions before that as well.

The Azadlyg newspaper reads that the reporter was beaten as he was preparing a report on the olive park which locates between the 6th and 9th micro-districts. The report was about illegal cutting and burning of trees in the park.

The due announcement was made by Azadlyg director general Azer Akhmedov, Day.Az reports with reference to ANS-Press.

He said the incident occurred in the 6th micro-district, as the reporter was shooting the olive park.

According to Akhmedov, two officials (names not called) came up to Khalil and demanded to present an identity card. When they saw the identity card of an Azadlyg newspaper official, they started to curse the newspaper, hit Khalil on the face, pushing him down. One of the officials tried to tie his legs, while the second wrapped the camera strap around reporter's neck and started to kick him.

The reporter managed to escape. According to Akhmedov, the reporter had his right hand fingers broken and he was seriously injured.

As is reported, Agil Khalil managed to take the photo of offenders.

A claim has been filed to the police.
