South Pacific islanders Tahiti scored a historic goal in their Confederations Cup debut, which ended in a respectable defeat by Nigeria (6-1).

Jonathan Tehau headed in a goal early in the second half at the Mineirao Stadium to reduce the deficit to 3-1. The Tahitians then gave their rowing boat celebration its biggest audience yet.

Nnamdi Oduamadi scored a hat-trick for the African champions, while Elderson Echiejile added two more.

Tehau also scored an own-goal.
