The Work Group on Human Rights composed of the representatives of NGOs and authorities held a regular session to sum up results of 2007 on December 29.

Members of the Work Group expressed their gratitude to President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev for signing a decree of pardon on December 28, 2007 and for taking into account proposals advanced by human rights organizations.

They also highly appreciated the attention the President has been paying to activities of the Work Group.

The human rights organizations expressed hope that President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, within his constitutional authority, will continue to support the Work Group`s activities and proposals on human rights protection.

The representatives of the human rights organizations and those of the government of Azerbaijan declared that constructive work of the Work Group will contribute to development of civil society and to solving many issues related to human rights protection in Azerbaijan, and that this work will intensify in 2008.

Members of the group Saida Gojamanli, Novella Jafaroglu, Eldar Zeynalov, Zeliha Tahirova, Sahib Mammadov, Arzu Abdullayeva, Saadat Benenyarli, Samad Seyidov, Ali Huseynov, Gultakin Hajiyeva, Bakhtiyar Aliyev, Fuad Alasgarov, Chingiz Asgarov, Kamala Ismayilova, Otari Gvaladze, Fazil Guliyev, Kamran Aliyev, Vefaddin Ibayev and Faig Gurbanov also participated in the meeting.

Human rights activist Novella Jafaroglu, who stated that some human rights activist left the Working Group after the pardon decree was issued, refused to elaborate on the cause of their current activity in the group.

She promised to declare the cause next year.
