International conference "Democracy in societies in transition" is to be held in Gulustan Place in Baku May 23.

The conference organized by Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences and State Management Academy at Azerbaijani President aims to study the theory and experience of contemporary democracy in newly independent states, including Azerbaijan.

The conference will debate on national democratic transit, successes and failures of new democratic wave, impact of globalization on the shape of democratic processes.

Mahmoud Karimov, president of National Academy of Sciences will make an opening speech. Chief of Office of President, Academician Ramiz Mehdiyev, Vladislav Inozemtsev, the editor of journal "Free opinion XXI" & head of the Centre for Post-Industrial Researches, Dr. Svante E. Cornell, Research Director of the Central Asia-Caucasus Institute and Silk Road Studies Program, Mr Shahin Aliyev, head the Department of Legislation and Legal Expertise at the Office of President, Ankara University professor Ergun Ozbudun and Cornelius Okhman, the representative of Bertelsmann Foundation will present reports on the subjects.

A specialist on Caucasus issues, independent scientist in political sciences Mamuka Arsheidze, charge d' affaires ad interim of US Embassy Jayson Hiland, Russia Ambassador Vasili Istatov, parliament's human rights commission chairman Rabiyyat Aslanova, independent political scientist Rasim Musabayov, professor at Moscow Institute of International Relations Andrey Dergachev, Jose Lous Herrero, head of OSCE Office in Baku, independent political scientist Elkhan Nuriyev, Azerbaijan National Sciences Academy Human Rights Department director Rovshan Mustafayev will also address the conference, APA reports.
