The level of the Caspian Sea will rise over 1 meter by 2015.
As a result of this rise, Azerbaijani 130.000 hectares of area will be flooded, Ecology and Natural Resources Ministry National Hydrometeorology Department official Amir Aliyev told the APA. He said the southern region- the area between the delta of the Kyur River till Astara region will be flooded. This region will share 90% of the flooded areas. The level of the sea rose by 2.5 meters in 1978-1995 which resulted in flooding of 50.000 hectares of area in Azerbaijan. 80% of the flooded areas were in the southern region. Mr Aliyev also said the rise in the sea level will have a negative impact on biological and hydrological life of the sea. The Ministry will publish the map of the flooded areas soon.
