July 14 marks the anniversary of the nationwide leader, former president Heydar Aliyev's coming to power in Azerbaijan for the first time in 1969.

A book by a PhD of history, professor Musa Gasymly entitled "Heydar Aliyev – the road to independence (1969-1987)", was presented on this occasion. Several other scholars and historians contributed to the publication of the book, AssA-Irada informs.

Speaking at the ceremony, the head of the President's Office socio-political department, Ali Hasanov, spoke of Heydar Aliyev's role in Azerbaijan's political life.
"There are many nations that have developed, reached a certain stage and put forth their will, but faced a predicament due to the absence of a real leader. We are witnessing the destruction of the Chechen people today. In the absence of a leader capable of proper governance and following certain adventurist leaders, these nations face destruction. There are plenty of such examples around the world. Heydar Aliyev's return to power took place at a time we needed a real and charismatic leader who would lead us to independence."

Hasanov said the day Aliyev came to power marked the outset of a new stage in the republic's history.

"Heydar Aliyev, who took the lead over the Azerbaijan Communist Party, created a new system of governance and outlined new principles of administration in Azerbaijan," the official said.
