The Azerbaijani "City of Light" marked the 65th anniversary of its founding on November 11.
The city geographically situated on both sides of the Kura River, was founded due to the construction of the biggest Trans Caucasian hydro electrical station at this location. It supplies energy to both Azerbaijan and its neighboring countries.
A solemn ceremony arranged to mark the City Day was attended by the Azerbaijani MPs, the representatives of foreign embassies in Azerbaijan, the guest of Mingachevir`s sister cities from Belarusian Polosk and Turkish Kars, the first founders of the city and thousands of residents the anniversary event started at Sahil park on the Kura River. Participants held a ceremony paying tribute to the great leader Heydar Aliyev and laid flowers at his monument.
Founded after World War II on November 11, 1948, the young industrial city's construction involved nearly 20,000 people, including 10,000 German prisoners captured during the Second World War.
Even 5,000 years ago, small towns and ebullient life existed there.Archaeological findings revealed high level trade, craftsmanship and cultural relations of the ancient settlement.
Taken from these archaeological excavations, historical exhibits were introduced to the participants.
Congratulating city residents on the occasion of the anniversary, the head of the Mingachevir executive power Niyazi Bayramov, and MP Aydin Mirzazade emphasized that the city contributed to the development of industry in the country in a very short period of time. A number of experts from the former Soviet Union countries have worked and lived in Mingechevir. The city's originality and beauty distinguishes it today.
Outdoor performances of actors in front of the Mingechevir State Drama Theatre followed the ceremony. Athletic demonstrations and musicians' colorful performances, added a special beauty to the ceremony. Folklore performances, created by the pupils were met warmly by the participants, too.
Detailed information about the history of the Mingechevir hydroelectric power station was given to the guests during an organized tour.
The anniversary further continued with events at the Heydar Aliyev Center, where the audience viewed a film featuring the history of Mingachevir, "City of Light" (Nur shahari).
Then talking about the great path of development of the city over 65 years, speakers noted the important role of the electric stations in Mingachevir in providing energy to the country and the city's contribution to the development of the country's economy.
The achievements in the field of education, large-scale construction in the city, as well as renovation and reconstruction works were also addressed during the speeches.
Honorary diplomas were presented to people taking an active part in the social and political life of the city.
The anniversary ceremony was completed with the concert program of famous artists and fireworks.
The growth and development of the city is closely related to the construction of electric, petrochemical, chemical, textile and food products facilities.
With its location on the riverside, the city turns out to be a paradise both for fishery and various animals. Mingachevir is also known for water birds, beavers, and unique fish.
Mingechevir Polytechnic Institute and the Culture and Tourism Collage operate in the city. The city also is known for its rowing center from the Soviet period.
