About 3500 earthquakes were recorded in Azerbaijan and in its border areas in 2011, Gurban Etirmishli, director of the Republican Seismological Service of the Azerbaijani National Academy of Sciences told Trend on Wednesday. He said 17 earthquakes were felt with the strongest one measuring 4 - 4.5.

Mr Etirmishli said three earthquakes measuring 4 - 4.5 were recorded. The Azerbaijani-Georgian border observed quakes measuring 4.5 and the Zaqatala and Qabala regions felt quakes measuring 4. Other perceptible quakes measured 3-3,5.

He said from the point of view of high seismicity, the Shamakhi-Ismayilli region is active in the country because of weak quakes and fault lines.
