Chairman of the Georgian Parliament welcomed the U.S. Senate's resolution that recognizes Abkhazia and South Ossetia as Russian-occupied territories.

Speaker David Bakradze said that it is a very important document.

"Some documents may not change reality instantly," he said. "But they create a political environment in which Russia will sooner or later have to complete the occupation."

Bakradze said that the adoption of these documents and the strengthening of the term "occupation" mean that there are no new nations. But Russia tries to represent the separatist regions at the international level.

Military actions were launched in the unrecognized republic of South Ossetia in August 2008. Georgian troops entered Tskhinvali, the capital of South Ossetia, and later Russian troops occupied the city and drove the Georgian military back to Georgia.

Russia recognized the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia on Aug. 26 and established diplomatic relations with the regions on Sept. 9, 2008.
