About 2,800 prisoners will be freed in Iran in connection with the month of Ramadan. In general, these are individuals, who were not able to repay debt to individuals or legal entities, Iran's Prison Service Head Gulamhuseyn Ismaili said, the Iranian news agency khabaronline.ir reported.

Ismaili said some of these debts were returned from public funds, some debtors were forgiven debts and the part was paid by insurance companies.

"The state allocated $50 million for measures to release prisoners, in 2009. So far, $35 million of these funds has already been spent," Ismaili said.
