24 February 2014 [10:00] - Today.Az
Hollywood actress and the Special Envoy for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Angelina Jolie embarked Sunday on a tour of areas hosting Syrian refugees in Lebanon's Beqaa province, World Bulletin reported.
"Jolie will be visiting Syrian refugee families, but will not be holding any press conferences," UNCHR spokeswoman in Lebanon Joelle Eid told Anadolu Agency.
She said the visit might last for two days.
Local media said Jolie arrived in Lebanon late Saturday and spent the night in the Beqaa town of Zahle, which reportedly hosts around 300,000 Syrian refugees.
Hollywood superstar Jolie became the UNHCR's special envoy in 2012 after she had been the UN agency's goodwill ambassador.
Syria has been in the throes of conflict since 2011, when a peaceful uprising against the Damascus regime escalated following a violent government crackdown.
Some 3.5 million Syrians are internally displaced while 2.5 million have sought refuge in neighboring countries.
Lebanon is the largest Syrian refugees host country in the region, with over 935,000 refuges registered with the UNHCR.
Around a third of all Syrian refugees in Lebanon are located in the eastern Beqaa area near the borders with Syria.
