In the future everything will be done to ensure that the most important achievement of Georgia, its independence, will never be questioned, the Prime Minister of Georgia Bidzina Ivanishvili said at a ceremony held in the Parliament building in Tbilisi on Tuesday as a mark of respect to the people who signed the Act of Independence on April 9, 1991.
"Twenty-two years ago, in the parliamentary conference room, the act of restoration of Georgia's independence was signed. This happened when the Soviet system still existed. This historic event and the adopted decision was an example of heroism. People were ready for any ordeal and proved that on April 9, 1989. Two years later, on March 31, Georgians and other ethnic citizens living in the country unanimously voted at a referendum for the restoration of independence, "the Prime Minister said.
According to him, today is a very symbolic day. There are people in the audience who personally signed the Act of Independence.
"I want to pay my great respect to them for achieving this. Especially I want to honour the memory of the author of all this, Zviad Gamsakhurdia, and those who signed this act but did not live to see this day.
"I want to note once more that 22 years ago they signed the most important act in our recent history and it was the beginning of what we are envisaging now. During these years despite different dangers, no one questioned this great historic event and we will do everything to ensure that our main achievement, namely our independence, will never be questioned in the future," Ivanishvili said.
