Cooperation with NATO has shown the world the independence and sovereignty of Azerbaijan, Donald Lu, Chargé d'Affaires in the U.S. Embassy in Azerbaijan, said at a reception in honor of the 61st anniversary of NATO organized at the U.S. Embassy in Baku on April 29.
He said it was a difficult step and requires vision, leadership and courage. "We welcome Azerbaijan's efforts for integration into Euro-Atlantic alliance," said Lu.
According to him, Azerbaijan's participation in the formation of peacekeeping corps in Afghanistan and Iraq showed that NATO can find a good partner amongst Muslim countries as well.
He said NATO is not only a military alliance, but also the union of values. NATO can contribute to Azerbaijan's development, and in its return, the country can also assist in the development of the alliance, the American diplomat believes.
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Romania to Azerbaijan Nikolai Ureki believes that NATO is the most powerful military union as it is an alliance of the allies. "Given the large number of events held this month in line of NATO, April may be considered as the month of NATO in Azerbaijan," he said.
According to Lu, in Afghanistan, Azerbaijan is also engaged in mine clearance and conducts trainings for the police agencies. "It testifies that Azerbaijan has taken the leadership," he said.
Lu also appreciated the Azerbaijani-American military cooperation, which was testified by the last year's exercise. He expressed hope that they will continue in future.
