Cory Welt, associate director of the Institute for European, Russian and Eurasian Studies at the Elliott School of International Affairs, George Washington University, expressed his opinion expressed his opinion on the possible movements in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict resolution.
"The Karabakh peace process has been overshadowed recently by the squabbling surrounding the ratification of the Turkish-Armenian protocols. While the Armenian constitutional court has been correct to note that the protocols are not legally linked to other issues related to third-parties (i.e., the Karabakh conflict), it has avoided confronting the political reality that the Turkish parliament wants Armenia to make some kind of movement toward resolving the conflict before ratifying the protocols," the expert said.
"Now that Yerevan feels itself misled, however, and is encountering domestic criticism of its position, it is hardly in a position to make any significant concessions on Karabakh. The important thing at this juncture is to keep discussions on both the protocol ratification and Karabakh on track. If one fails, almost certainly so will the other," he said.
