Azerbaijan is perplexed at Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian’s recent statement, Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Elkhan Polukhov said.

The [Nagorno-Karabakh] negotiations can see certain progress, but I think no breakthrough will take place in negotiations in 2010,” Armenian FM stated at a press conference on Jan. 22.

“Armenian foreign minister contradicts himself. His statement which lack logic and sense was made on the eve of the upcoming meeting between Armenian and Azerbaijani Presidents Serzh Sargsyan and Ilham Aliyev to be held under the patronage of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.”

"Does this mean that while organizing a meeting of his country’s president, Nalbandian sums up outcomes of the meeting in advance and draws conclusions for the entire 2010?,” he said.

"This statement seems even more strange on the backdrop of his own statements he made recently noting that high dynamics that the Karabakh negotiations saw in 2009 must be maintained in 2010,” Polukhov said.

"The entire negotiation process is targeted at achieving a just settlement to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. It seems that the Armenian side is negotiating for the sake of negotiations, which is unacceptable for Azerbaijan, and we will not support this kind of the negotiation process,” he added.
