“The U.S. should substantiate its steps,” Azerbaijani Presidential Administration International Affairs Department Chief Novruz Mammadov said.
He was commenting on the U.S. Congress aid to break-away Nagorno Karabakh.
Noting that it was impossible to assess the issue explicitly, the department chief said position of Azerbaijani organizations making statements about it was just.
“The U.S. should substantiate its steps. Of course, this is position of the Congress, not of the U.S. government. But the Congress is legislative body of the U.S. So, decisions passed by the Congress lay responsibility on the U.S. as a state. I think the Azerbaijani parliament and other structures have a right to demand justice. They have a right to ask why this step is taken, while we are partner of the U.S. and have strong cooperation in all spheres,” he said.
Mammadov said it is impossible to find a state like Azerbaijan in the post-Soviet area that has successful and all-round cooperation with the West.
“It can be seen in all spheres. The energy cooperation is particularly important. This meets more West’s interests. This arises a question. What attitude should be shown towards Azerbaijan in exchange for it, where is the love, attention, aid to Azerbaijan? If the U.S. Congress indeed wants to help people, why doesn’t it allocate aid to one million Azerbaijani refugees and IDPs?”
“Azerbaijani state is doing its best to improve their hard conditions. But let the Congress assist those people. Why is Section 907, which bans assistance to Azerbaijan, still in force? We don’t see same attitude and neutrality towards Armenia and Azerbaijan. We are concerned over this issue. I think the Azerbaijani parliament made a very important step. The State Department, White House and the Congress should make conclusions from the parliament’s statement. Azerbaijan is an important country for the West and it will be so in future. Azerbaijan is an important country not only for its oil, but also for its geo-strategic location”.
