07 October 2009 [17:30] - Today.Az
"I think that the note which the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry handed to the Iranian ambassador fully reflects Azerbaijan’s position and the country had to express its dissatisfaction in this regard,” Co-Chair of the World Azerbaijanis Congress (WAC) and member of Milli Majlis (parliament) Sabir Rustamkhanli said commenting on media reports that the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry handed a note to the Iranian ambassador.
"Iran’s Sahar TV for many the years were engaged in slander not only against individual representatives of Azerbaijan, but also against the country itself. This channel has repeatedly expressed the slanderous and false ideas about Azerbaijan, as well as the idea that the territory of northern Azerbaijan belongs to Iran,” the MP said.
"Regarding Iran's response on this issue, I think that they simply say that this is a non-governmental channel, and will not interfere in its affairs as the channel can freely express its views,” he said.
“But this is wrong, because I believe that the Sahar TV channel is owned precisely by Iranian government. Iran every year further allows himself to commit such inadmissible acts against Azerbaijan and even openly defends interests of Armenians,” Rustamkhanli said.
"This is due to the fact that Iran does not want to see a strong independent state next to it. Iran has always faced problems of Azerbaijanis living in the country. Admittedly, Azerbaijanis make almost half of the population in Iran. So the Iranian government by its provocations tries not to let Azerbaijanis to ever assert their rights,” he said.
