21 April 2009 [16:38] - Today.Az
Turkish Republican People's Party (RPP) Leader Deniz Baykal stated about necessity of Turkish President Abdullah Gul's visit to Baku, the Turkish CNN Turk TV channel reported.
"Gul must visit Baku soon and eliminate differences and offence of Azerbaijan," he said.
Baykal also added that restoring the Turkish-Armenian relations is one of the biggest political mistakes of the governing Justice and Development Party (JDP).
"Turkey must not deprive Azerbaijan from warm relations which it renders to Somali and Bahrain," Baykal said.
Baykal believes Turkey can restore relations with Armenia whenever it wants, but it will be too difficult to restore relations with Azerbaijan, if it loses them.
Armenian-Turkish ties have been severed since 1993 due to Armenia's claims of an alleged genocide, and the country's occupation of 20 percent of Azerbaijani lands.
Turkish President Abdullah Gul visited Yerevan on Sept. 6, 2008 upon the invitation of his Armenian counterpart Serzh Sarkisyan to watch an Armenia-Turkey football match.
Efforts have been made to normalize ties between the two countries ever since.
