Azerbaijani FM Elmar Mamedyarov has sent a letter to the Helsinki commission of the US Congress regarding closure of foreign radio stations on the national frequencies.
The letter is sent to heads of the commission Asli Hasting, Bencamin Cardin and Christopher Smith.
The letter says that the closure of the foreign stations on the FM frequencies is based on the law, adopted in 2002 "On Television and Radio broadcasting" and this law was analyzed by the CE specialists during adoption.
"Though this law came into effect just after its approval, the National Television and Radio Counil has not started its implementation right away due to the creation of conditions for the Azerbaijani population to use foreign radio stations", says the letter.
Then it is noted that the law is related to all foreign broadcasters, including Liberty, Voice of America and BBC radio stations.
The Minister noted that the practice, applied by the National Council, exists in such countries as France, Great Britain and Germany, that have many years of democratic traditions.
"Foreign radio stations are free in their broadcasting on short waves and via Internet and cable communication", says the letter of the Foreign Ministry of Azerbaijan.
