EU special representative on the South Caucasus Peter Semneby commented on the plans to halt operation of foreign radio stations in Azerbaijan, reports Day.Az with reference to Azadlyg radio station.

He voiced hope that Azerbaijani authorities will not halt operation of foreign radio stations.

"I am anxious about the statement of the National Televsion and Radio Council about stoppage of broadcast of foreign radio stations by the end of the year. There are still unclear moments, but I do hope that Azerbaijan will not take this step", noted Semneby.

He said the situation in the sphere of mass media in Azerbaijan is on the top of the agenda. "We will further watch the situation in the sphere of media in Azerbaijan", said Semneby.

It should be noted that earlier chairman of the National Television and Radio Council Nushirevan Meherremli said the broadcast of foreign radio stations will be halted in January, 2009.
