Iran insists on enriching uranium on its own territory, but is ready to examine the Russian proposal on setting up a joint venture, spokesman of the Iranian Foreign Ministry Mohammad Ali Hosseini told a news conference on Sunday.

"Iran's principled position is that uranium enrichment should be made in the Iranian territory," the diplomat emphasized. "The Russian proposal (on setting up a joint venture on uranium enrichment) can be discussed and examined. It is still on the agenda," he added.

"Russia's position is closer to reality, but a road they (Russians) follow the situation around the Iranian 'nuclear file' is the same – the UN Security Council, apart from a fact that Russia's position on sanctions with respect to Iran differs from that of the US," Hosseini noted.

According to the spokesman, "a point that deserves attention is that Russia seeks to use its diplomatic possibilities to return the process to the previous negotiating track."

The spokesman noted that "Teheran is ready to continue cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on the grounds of its obligations within the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty." He also expressed confidence that "if the Iranian nuclear file returns to the IAEA, it will be much easier to settle the remaining problems." Itar-Tass
