Azerbaijani President Ilkham Aliyev hailed on Thursday relations between Azerbaijan and Russia, citing them as a role model in relations between a big and a smaller country, which used to be part of the former Soviet Union.
Bilateral ties develop very successfully both in the economic and political spheres, and meet the interests of both countries, the president said in an interview with Euronews, shown on Baku television, Itar-Tass reports. He said Azerbaijani-Russian cooperation is an example of good-neighborly relations basing on mutual interest, mutual understanding, friendship and non-interference in each other’s affairs. "We are carrying out major economic projects. Trade between our countries has grown twofold over the past two years (exceeding one billion dollars – ed), and has a tendency towards growth," the president said. Aliyev said the two countries are actively cooperating in the energy sphere, as well as on issues of security in the Caucasus. According to him, politically Azerbaijan and Russia have solved all problems, including the division of the national sectors of the Caspian Sea, a problem, which remained unresolved for many years. That is why relations between the two states can become a role model of relations between neighbors, between a big and a small country, which used to be part of the Soviet Union, Aliyev stressed. He is confident that positive tendencies in relations between Azerbaijan and Russia must be strengthened and developed in all spheres. Aliyev sees the existence of the Azerbaijani and Russian diasporas as an important factor in relations between the two states.
