International Crisis Group (ICG) is working on new projects in Southern Caucasus. The project named “European Union in Southern Caucasus” is led by director of “Caucasus Project” of ICG Sabina Freizer.
At present meetings and interviews are held in Georgia. According to the information given to APA by representative of ICG in Baku Vugar Gojayev, Sabina Freizer will visit Baku late in January.
She will meet with ambassadors of countries being members of the European Union (EU) accredited in Baku, different project leaders of EU as well as Azerbaijani officials – Foreign Minister, representatives of State Committee on work with Refugees and IDPs, international humanitarian organizations and local NGO and will gather information about the work EU has done in Azerbaijan since early 1990s and cooperation planned in prospects. In the framework of the project Sabina Freizer will try to find an answer to “What aids can European Union render in the post-conflict period of the Nagorno Garabagh problem”, and will investigate the possibility of its joining international peaceful forces set up in region.
One of the aims of the project is to study the mandate of special representative of EU on Southern Caucasus Heike Talvitie. In opinion of ICG representative, this mandate is more distinctly seen in Georgia, unlike Azerbaijan and Armenia, there is permanent representation of EU there. The report on the new project will be submitted to European Union in March.
