Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly President Rene van der Linden expressed his concern on violent dispersement of a peaceful opposition demonstration in Baku on November 26.

According to the information given to APA from the Council of Europe, the President of PACE condemned unjustified use of force against a peaceful political rally: "At this sensitive time of protests concerning the November elections, I call on the President and authorities of Azerbaijan to respect the rights of peaceful opposition demonstrants, in particularly by abstaining from the use of force. At the same time, I call on the leaders of the opposition to ensure that they and their supporters behave responsibly during this delicated period."

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe participated in the international election observation mission that scrutinised the November 6 parliamentary elections. The delegation is expected to return to the country before the end of the year to report on actions taken against an electoral fraud.

Azerbaijan is subject to the Parliamentary Assembly's monitoring of obidience of the country to its obligations and commitments to the Council of Europe.
