A man left for dead in a hit-and-run accident had a chunk of his skull removed - but made it to watch the cricket in Australia just 10 days later. Peter Wright, 40, had a segment of his cranium removed after the accident, which had put his brain under extreme pressure.

A tailor-made plastic section was inserted in its place, and despite also losing an eye, Mr Wright, from Bristol, amazed surgeons by flying to Australia to watch the Ashes a week and a half later.

He even had to sleep on the floor of the airport after his flight was delayed by snowstorms.

The consultant behind the surgery, Simon Holmes, told the Daily Mirror: "He was obviously in serious trouble.

"Once the brain starts being squashed, it swells more, the blood supply stops and the patient can die.

"They took the top of the skull off and threw it in the bin because it was contaminated and everything swelled up like Humpty Dumpty.

"But it allowed the blood flow to stabilise so he had a chance to recover."

Once Mr Wright's condition stabilised, measurements were taken for the implant, which was made in Switzerland.

He then had to wear a helmet until the operation at Barts and The London NHS Trust, and was allowed home after three months.

The gap in his skull measured more than 10cm at its widest and ran from ear to ear.

Mr Wright is now back at work following the procedure last winter. He said the operation was a "miracle".

He added: "The scar still feels a bit sore when I wash my hair, but that is nothing much and it will lessen."
