South African paleontologist Francis Thackeray wants to analyse the poet’s teeth and bones after claiming that tests on Shakespeare’s tobacco pipes had shown traces of the drug.
He said: ‘I firmly believe from my previous studies that Shakespeare was a user of cannabis. I think some of his writings include cryptic references to drugs, and it could be what helped him paint such vivid images with his words.
‘We hope that we will be granted permission to begin this project.’
If given the go-ahead, Prof Thackeray will use scanning equipment to create a 3D image of the bard.
The playwright’s tomb, at his parish church in Stratford-Upon-Avon, Warwickshire, has an epitaph reading: ‘Good friend for Jesus sake forbeare/ To dig the dust enclosed here/ Blessed be the man that spares these stones/ And cursed be he that moves my bones’.
Prof Thackeray said: ‘We are confident that we could complete our work without moving a single bone.’
