A trip to Russia, for instance, can put an Italian in a deep winter depression - a syndrome caused by lack of sunshine and joy. But this happens not only to residents of warm countries, but also to those who live in cold countries.
In the slush of cold December, bright sunshine warming your body can radically change your mood, making you smile and grow more joyful.
Climate is changeable in nature and it can change humans as well, sometimes making them kind and sometimes cruel. So a person who has moved from the north to the south can change beyond recognition. And here I would be brave enough to say climate can define people's character and act as a 'mood barometer'.
"Azerbaijanis are warm people". That's what we hear frequently from expiates and guests who visit Azerbaijan, a wonderful land on the Caspian seashore with quite soft, and at the same time changeable climate at different places. The geographical location, unimaginable peace, and uniqueness of the Caspian Sea bring magic to the Land of Fire, which is famous for its hospitality.
You'll be surprised, nine out of the 11 existing climate types can be found in Azerbaijan. "Wow!" you will exclaim. "What does that mean?" It means you can witness a striking contrast in nature -unbearably cold winters and very hot summers.
The temperature changes dramatically from land to land, enabling you to choose a season yourself.
December, the last month of the outgoing year, has already brought cold and frost, creating joy for kids and problems for grown-ups. Snow did not take long to appear - it first covered the mountainous regions of the north -Gusar, Guba, Khizi, and Shamakha. The harsh climate of this area is due to the Greater Caucasus, highest points of which in Azerbaijan are the Bazarduzu and Shahdagh mountains. The big Brown Shahdagh without snowy peaks looks like a huge castle with an incredible wildlife. So enjoy, if you like extreme!
Air temperature here may drop 20 degrees below zero in the winter, leading to freezing of the hundred-meter waterfalls flowing down mountain slopes and turning them into giant ice blocks, which attract climbers.
If we go further south, we will notice that the climate becomes milder and mountains fade out, giving way to flat terrains. The Absheron peninsula and the surrounding areas are known for their hot summers and cold winter winds. Winds are a frequent guest to this area, which doesn't have mountains.
The average temperature in Baku and the Absheron Peninsula will be 4-7 degrees above zero, sometimes dropping to 7-12 degrees below zero in December, the National Hydrometeorology Department's forecast shows.
According to the forecast, Azerbaijan's coldest districts will be Sheki, Oguz, Shamakha, Khizi, Guba, Gusar, as well as Khankandi, Shusha, Khojali, Lachin, and Zangilan of the Upper Karabakh region. The weather here will fall to 15 degrees below zero in December.
Cold weather will also reign in Ganja, Gazakh, Goranboy, Agdam, Fuzuli and Nakhchivan.
The central regions of Azerbaijan also have no mountainous landscape and are dominated by lowlands and plains. Kur-Araz Lowland, stretching for 250 kilometers and located on the Kura and Araz rivers between the Greater Caucasus and the Lesser Caucasus, is well-known for its warm and dry climate.
Therefore, December won't be cold here - the average temperature will be 1-6 degrees above zero in Mingachevir, Yevlakh, Goychay, Agdash, Kurdamir, Imishli, Agjabadi, Beylagan, Sabirabad, Bilasuvar, Saatli, Shirvan, Hajigabul, Salyan, and Neftchala.
Talysh Mountains, which are located in the south of Azerbaijan, are known for their thermal waters. Heare rain falls for almost one-third of the year, so it can be said the region has a record number of annual precipitation. Summer is hot here, while winter is milder than the other parts of the Eastern Transcaucasia.
December will not be so gentle for Masalli, Yardimli, Lerik and Astara, and temperature will drop to 7-10 degrees below zero in the mountains, the National Hydrometeorology Department's forecast shows.
Abnormally cold weather is expected to stay in Azerbaijan by mid-December.
