Google just announced that it's bringing offline language support to its Google Translate app for Android. The company allows offline translations for fifty languages "from French and Spanish to Chinese and Arabic."

Google readily admits that the results you'll get offline are "less comprehensive" than when you've got a data connection to work with, but offline support should be enough to provide key phrases in a pinch. To gain offline functionality, you'll need to download language packages from within the app, after which you can wander abroad with at least a basic translator in your pocket at all times.

Android 2.3 is required for the latest version of Google Translate which can be downloaded via Google Play now.
