25 July 2013 [12:07] - Today.Az
American artist Mark Jenkins is opening his personal exhibition as part of the “Participate” Public Art Festival in the Azerbaijani capital of Baku.
Within Mark’s workshop students create a series of projects for the urban environment on the same topic Animal Planet. The sculptures are created from a special transparent packing tape. The created objects will then be placed on the streets of Baku as an artistic intervention. The artist also will present his interactive project called «Minimals» for art students.
Mark Jenkins is an American artist most widely known for the street installations he creates using clear packing tape. Jenkins' practice of street art is to use the "street as a stage" where his sculptures interact with the surrounding environment including passersby who unknowingly become actors.[1] His installations often draw the attention of the police. His work has been described as whimsical, macabre, surrealist, absurdist, shocking and "situationist", the latter referring to Situationist International. Jenkins cites Juan Muñoz as his initial inspiration whose retrospective exhibit he saw at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in 2002.
In addition to creating art, he also teaches his sculpture techniques and installation practices through workshops. He currently lives in Washington, DC.
