Cult Turkish arabesque singer Müslüm Gürses, who had been in intensive care for liver and renal failure for three months, is living with the help of a machine supporting his lung but is not brain dead, according to his doctor.
“Gürses is living with a life-support machine, but he is not brain dead. His general situation is not good, and we could lose him,” said Cardiology Specialist Dr. Deniz ?ener from the Memorial Hospital in Istanbul, where Gürses is being treated.
Some media reports have already said Gürses has died, with Health Minister Mehmet Müzezzino?lu also announcing the singer’s death on his Twitter account.
“We are supporting the lung with a machine. He is moving his legs and arms but he is unconscious. His treatment is continuing under the special care unit,” ?ener was quoted as saying by Anatolia news agency.
The press adviser of the Memorial Hospital, Binhan Urfal?, told the Hürriyet Daily News that Gürses was in a critical condition but had “not been declared dead by his doctors.”
Sixty-year-old Müslüm Gürses was born in 1953 in ?anl?urfa, Turkey. He mostly sang Turkish folk and Ottoman classical music in an arabesque style, and his talent and unique style gave him a unique position among arabesque singers.
His songs mostly expressed sorrow and painful feelings, and he is considered a cult figure in Turkish folk music with a very dedicated group of fans, most of whom are young, low-income urban people who affectionately know him as “Müslüm Baba” (Papa Müslüm).
Gürses later drew a broader fan base by moving into pop music, and in his later career he covered a number of popular Turkish and international rock songs. In 2006, he covered Garbage’s “The World is not Enough” on his album “A?k Tesadüfleri Sever” (Love Loves Coincidences). The song was re-arranged and sung in Turkish under the title “Bir Ömür Yetmez” (A Life Is Not Enough).
He has released 71 albums and acted in 38 films.
