As part of creating a new Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway, designed to combine the rail systems of Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey, work started on the construction of the station building in Kartsakhi (Georgian section), Azerbaijan's Transport Minister Ziya Mammadov said in an interview posted on the official website of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party.
Also, Mammadov said work is underway on the preparation of road bed and construction of facilities at the section of Akhalkalaki-Kartsakhi (border with Turkey). The construction of 46 different drainage systems, five bridges and road junctions, as well as construction of water channels in the foothills in the length of 2,5 kilometers have already been completed.
Work has also been completed on the design within the construction of the station to replace the wheelsets (Akhalkalaki), tunnel in length of 4.2 kilometers, which will be built on the Georgian border with Turkey, the Minister said.
The Minister said that work under the first phase of reconstruction and rehabilitation of 158-km section of Akhalkalaki-Marabda has already begun. Work in this regard is planned to be implemented in three stages.
A new 105-kilometer railroad branch will be constructed as a part of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars Railway. About 76 kilometers will stretch via Turkey, 29 kilometers through Georgia.
Moreover, an Akhalkalaki-Tbilisi-Marabda railway section will be reconstructed in Georgia to increase transport capacity up to 15 million tons of cargo a year. A point of train transition from the existing train tracks in Georgia to the European one is planned to be built in Akhalkalaki.
Mammadov said earlier that the completion of construction work is planned for the first half of 2012. But, despite the agreed timeframe of the project, the sides are working to speed up the process and complete most of the works by the end of 2011.
The corridor's peak capacity will hit 17 million tons. Initially, its capacity will reach 1 million passengers and 6.5 million tons of cargo.
