Despite certain delays, Kars- Baku-Akhalkalaki railway which will connect Asia with Europe will end by 2012, Mardabi-Kartsakhi Railway director Bidzina Bregadze said.
He said implementation of the project already behind schedule. “Schedule is indeed interrupted, but it does not create serious problems,” he said.
The Azerbaijani media reported that Azerbaijan’s State oil Fund has allocated $33 million so far to construct Georgian section of the Kars-Akhalkalaki railway. Azerbaijan is expected to allocate extra $100 million by end of the year.
“We visited Azerbaijan in an effort to facilitate the process. Latest developments in Georgia had a negative impact on fund raising,” Bregadze said.
He said there are also technical problems.
“Problems emerged during construction of a tunnel connecting Georgia and Turkey. It turned out that the tunnel is located in a avalanche zone. So, we had to change the project. A new project will be approved before the work starts,” Bregadze said.
