Azerbaijan's non-governmental organizations can hold monitoring and familiarize with the living conditions of detainees held in Guantanamo Bay detention camp in Cuba.

The US Embassy public affairs officer Jonathan Henick told APA that it would be better if not only one but several influential NGOs hold this monitoring.

Elchin Behbudov, head of the Azerbaijan Committee Against Torture has recently applied to the US Embassy for his monitoring of the Guantanamo prison.

Mr.Henick said he is not familiar with Behbudov's appeal and added that several international NGOs appealed to the US government for monitoring of the detention camp six months ago.

"The United Stated agreed to this. However, in final moment, these organizations refused to do it, which, of course caused serious dissatisfaction of the US government," the public affairs officer said.

Henick also noted that those appealing for monitoring of the Guantanamo prison and meet detainees there should not change their minds later on. He did not name of these organizations.

Responding to the question "Perhaps, the terms made by the US government did not satisfy these NGOs," Henick said that he has not been informed about that.
