Arctic weather kills more in Russia

21 January 2006 [00:30] - TODAY.AZ
It has been described as Russia's coldest winter in a generation and it is continuing to take a heavy toll.

Thirteen people are reported to have died in the past 24 hours as temperatures plunge to Arctic levels - as low as -38 celsius in the north west, reports EuroNews.

Most of the victims were homeless people. Authorities and charities have mobilised to help those without shelter but are unable to care for everyone in need.

Russia's coldest spell in 26-years has raised fears of blackouts as energy demands soar. Countries which buy gas from Russia could see their supplies affected.
