Azerbaijan may in the short term join a Kazakh project which envisages gas exports to China, President of State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) Rovnag Abdullayev said.

"I have recently had a meeting with President of Kazakhstan’s state energy company KazMunaiGaz Kairgeldy Kabyldin. He proposed Azerbaijan to join their project to export natural gas to China. Azerbaijan has enough stocks of gas and sales market. We can consider this proposal,” he added.
As part of the Central Asia–China gas transportation project to transport natural gas from Central Asia to China, Kazakhstan intends to bring on stream the first gas pipeline to China by the end of 2009.
The project envisages the construction of two parallel pipelines with a total length of 1 304.5 kilometers.
The project is part of the Central Asian pipeline providing for deliveries of Turkmen gas to China via Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.
As early as 2010, Turkmenistan plans to export 5 billion cubic meters of gas to China.
Negotiations are under way as to how to connect Uzbekistan to the project.
