Alan Vaddams: Resources of Azerbaijan are enough to launch Nabucco

- At the summit in Prague the Declaration on the Nabucco gas project was signed only by Azerbaijan among the main potential suppliers of "blue fuel", while Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan abstained from supporting the document. Will this not complicate the implementation of this project?

- No, this is not a problem. The case was that these three countries - Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan - did not have a declaration in advance. Thus, the representatives of these countries, which were high-ranking representatives - Ministers, Deputy Prime Minister - could not  read the full text of the document, and they had no mandate to sign it.

- However, sources in the government of Kazakhstan have argued that the decision to abstain was adopted on purpose in order not to spoil relations with Russia ...

- It was accepted this way by some people, but this is wrong. It is not a secret, Russia knew that, we talked with Russia in this regard. Proposals for the Northern Corridor are open, and they are on the table. We see absolutely no resistance from Russia.

On the other hand, it is necessary to state clearly that Nabucco is intended for the gas from the Caspian region. And this will happen, I have no doubt in this regard.

- Do you think that the Azerbaijani gas is sufficient for this project?

- Resources of Azerbaijan are sufficient to launch Nabucco, but not sufficient for a long-term project.

- How do you feel about the statement made by the Executive Secretary of CIS S. Lebedev that the participation of the six post-Soviet countries in the East Partnership initiative contravenes a number of documents adopted within the Commonwealth, and these countries need to determine whether they continue to integrate into the European Union, or remain in the Commonwealth of Independent States?

- I do not see any conflict here. It is not a choice that needs to be done between the Commonwealth of Independent States and the European Union. Six CIS countries joined the East Partnership program voluntarily. This is process which will only be useful.
